We had a great day planting roses and sword ferns along the new spawning channel. These plants contribute many amazing things to the ecosystem! The long thorny stems protect birds from predators. The stems that overarch the stream also protect the fish and amphibians. Branches shade the stream, keeping the water cool. Insects that live on the roses feed the birds. Many insects also fall into the stream to feed the fish. The flowers have a heavenly fragrance that is wonderful to enjoy.
They also attract pollinators that increase food production. The roots hold the soil to prevent erosion, keeping the water clear. Also, these particular roses were salvaged from a site that is drier than most places where roses grow. Using these roses provides genetic diversity that may be important in adapting to climate change.
